Cristiano Ronaldo’s vow after joining Emmanuel Adebayor and David James on elite list

After being nominated for his second successive PFA Player of the Year award 13 years ago, Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments are inspirational when looking back on his almighty career. As he started collecting his enormous collection of individual accolades as a young star in Manchester, Ronaldo made his immense aims clear.

The Portuguese icon was named PFA Player of the Year for the first time in 2007 and had the chance to pick up back-to-back awards 12 months later.

After netting 31 goals in 34 Premier League games for Manchester United in the 2007/08 season, Ronaldo was nominated alongside Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Cesc Fabregas, Emmanuel Adebayor and David James.

The then-22-year-old unsurprisingly won the award, as well as a second successive Premier League Player of the Season accolade.

But even before his first individual honour, his sights were firmly set on reaching Ballon d’Or-winning level over a prolonged period.

But he’s still been scoring goals for fun at Juventus and United, the club where he won his first of the prestigious award.

Since returning to Old Trafford in the summer, the 36-year-old has scored nine goals in 12 appearances for United.

He has single-handedly kept Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side afloat in the Champions League and has shown no signs of slowing down domestically.

But with a new age of superstars now emerging in Europe, his 2017 Ballon d’Or success will have most likely been his last.
