Dan Harmon Says Zack Snyder Wanted to Use His ‘Snyder-ness’ to Make a Rick and Morty Movie Happen

Rick and Morty fans have been asking for a movie for years – and those fans apparently include Zack Snyder.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon said that Snyder called him over to Warner Bros. one day to discuss the potential of adapting Rick and Morty for the big screen. Specifically, he recalled the Justice League director asking him if there was any sway he could have in jump-starting the production of the Rick and Morty film as a fan of the show, not as a filmmaker who wants to take over.

“Not him saying, ‘I get to do it,’ or anything like that. He was totally a super fan and was just like, ‘Is there any way I can help get that movie started by using my Snyder-ness?'” Harmon said. Then he joked, “So, the Rick and Morty movie is coming as soon as Zack Snyder gets back from his vacation, because I want to start with a Snyder cut of that movie and then I want to do the director’s cut of a Snyder cut release, so we can just have a six-hour Rick and Morty movie and three hours of it is in black and white.”

Harmon did talk more seriously about it, though, saying there was once a meeting with Warner Bros. executives where it felt like it was “maybe time to get the ball rolling” on a feature-length take on the popular Adult Swim series. He said it wouldn’t be too much of a departure from the show, but rather “a super badass episode of Rick and Morty.”

“My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long,” he continued.

He also added that he’d prefer to work on the film while the Rick and Morty series is still ongoing: “It’s best that way, because I don’t think it should be this canonical thing that relies on the series to do things and changes everything after that.”

Meanwhile, Rick and Morty found new voice actors for the titular protagonists to replace creator Justin Roiland, who was fired from the show following since-dropped charges of domestic violence, for the upcoming season. Adult Swim said, however, they won’t release the names of the new voices until after the season premiere.

Rick and Morty Season 7 premieres Oct. 15.
