Erik ten Hag speaks out after Man Utd booed off in Bournemouth humiliation

Erik ten Hag was quick to insist that he understood the frustration of supporters after Manchester United were put to the sword by Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The visitors scored three goals without reply in a barn-storming performance to claim a historic victory, while United were miles off the pace and faced the furious wrath of their home fans after the final whistle.

A loud chorus of boos rang out from the stands as United’s players trudged off the pitch, with their supporters not holding back in their assessment of the Red Devils’ lacklustre showing. A large number of empty seats were also visible during the closing stages of the match due to fans leaving the stadium early after deciding they had seen enough.

Ten Hag was later quizzed on the hostile full-time reaction and insisted that supporters had every right to be angry with what they had witnessed from their team, who managed just three shots on target despite having 69 per cent of possession.

“I understand that they are disappointed and frustrated,” said the Dutchman. “We all are. We have to do better and we have to do it every game.”

The United boss went on to take full responsibility for the outcome of the match while bemoaning his side’s lack of consistency after winning just four of their last seven games in all competitions.

He added: “I have to take responsibility for it. We are really inconsistent. We have the ability but we have to do it every game. You need consistency. We can play a very good game against many opponents. We are able to do it but you have to do it every third day. Get it right and the demands are of a certain standard. We have to go to higher standards to deliver it every third day.”

United will be desperate to bounce back in their next outing, with Bayern Munich set to visit Old Trafford on Tuesday in the final round of Champions League group stage fixtures. Ten Hag will certainly be expecting a positive response from his players after showing what they are truly capable of in their impressive victory over Chelsea in midweek.

“We know we are able to do it, we showed it in the week,” he replied when asked if United can beat Bayern, who have already booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages. “We have to leave this behind but we have to talk about it.”
