Google Maps to expand ‘Immersive View’ to routes: What it means, and the cities getting it – Times of India
Google Maps is expanding the Immersive View, introduced last year, to include routes. If you search for directions on Google Maps on iOS and Android, you will soon be able to view a more immersive route, including details about traffic, intersections, weather, and more.
“Google Maps provides 20 billion kilometres of directions every day,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said during the I/O 2023 keynote. “That’s a lot of trips. Imagine if you could see your whole trip in advance. With Immersive View for Routes, now you can, whether you are walking, cycling, or driving.”
What is Immersive View for Routes
Google Maps’ Immersive View combines computer vision and AI to merge billions of Street View and aerial images into a digital representation of the world. Immersive View for Routes works in the same way, providing a preview of a route to help you understand it before you embark on it.
Immersive View for Routes allows you to view all the necessary information about your route at once. This feature provides a multidimensional experience by showing bike lanes, sidewalks, intersections, and parking spots along your journey when you get directions.
With this feature, users can preview the weather conditions or traffic situation on a particular day and time in a specific area. The feature also offers a time slider that displays air quality and how the route may change as the weather fluctuates throughout the day.
In addition, Google has introduced an Aerial View API for developers. This allows developers to incorporate a pre-packaged, bird’s-eye video of a location into their apps and websites, visually representing the area.
Cities Immersive View for Routes is coming to
In the next few months, the Immersive View for Routes feature will be available for 15 cities, including Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Seattle, Tokyo, and Venice. No Indian city is on the list; it remains to be seen if the feature is rolled out in the country.
