Hong Kong footballer lands move to Europe as Jojo rides Asian Games momentum

Hong Kong footballer Alex Jojo, who starred in the national team’s record-breaking run at this year’s Asian Games, has completed a transfer from Tai Po to IK Oddevold in Sweden.

Defender Jojo, 24, who made five appearances at the Games in Hangzhou as the city’s under-23s reached the Asiad semi-finals for the first time, is expected to link up with his new club in January.

He has previous experience in Europe, having spent two years with the youth team of Portuguese club Vizela before returning to Hong Kong to sign for Happy Valley in 2019. The following year Jojo joined Eastern, where he stayed until transferring to Tai Po for this campaign.

Jojo, who is of Swedish descent, was named in Hong Kong head coach Jorn Andersen’s extended 41-man preliminary squad for a pre-AFC Asian Cup training camp beginning this week. If he makes the final party, his arrival in Sweden will be delayed until the end of the tournament in Qatar.

“This is an important step for me and I will do everything to make the club and the supporters happy,” Jojo told IK Oddevold’s website. “I am looking forward to a good season and I feel very hopeful.”

Oddevold will start the 2024 campaign in April in Sweden’s second division after winning last season’s third-tier title.

The club’s sporting director, Mats Winblad, said: “Alex is an ambitious guy, who will fit well into our team-building. It is a good opportunity for us both sportingly and financially.”

In the Hong Kong Premier League, meanwhile, Lee Man survived a fightback from Jojo’s former club Tai Po to land a significant blow in the title race on Sunday.

The visitors sped into a three-goal lead, with Dudu, Everton Camargo and Paulinho all scoring between the seventh and 12th minutes. Kayron quickly replied for Tai Po and Philip Chan Siu-kwan’s 81st-minute strike set-up a grandstand finish, but Lee Man clung on to win 3-2 and move three points ahead of Kitchee at the top of the table.
