How Microsoft used Bing Chat to sway users away from Google Chrome – Times of India

For several years, Microsoft and Google have had an ongoing feud where they aggressively try to retain or steal users. No one’s the culprit here, as both try new tactics now and then to lure users to their platforms and in the latest case, Microsoft was found plaguing Bing Chat‘s answer to pull users to Edge.
As discovered by The Verge that Bing’s new AI feature was not providing relevant search results when searching for Google Chrome. Instead, the AI “widget” would only display Bing features since it currently doesn’t work within Chrome.
The webpage displayed a full-screen advertisement for Bing and Edge instead of showing relevant search results. The links and information the user needed were hidden from view.
Microsoft did not solely rely on AI for this, as the responses generated were not identical. The experiment always produced the same text, suggesting simulation.
After being questioned about this behaviour, Microsoft promptly ended it, revealing that it was an experiment. In a statement, Microsoft said that such “experiments” are often “brief.”
It is not the first time Microsoft has tried to lure away users looking for AI-assisted search features. Earlier this year, Microsoft’s Edge browser showed an ad for Being next to the Google Bard URL in the search bar. The ad disappears but leaves a Bing icon in its place, which opens up the Bing chatbot in Edge’s split view.
This feature was found on the developer version of Microsoft Edge for Mac and PC. However, such an ad was never seen in the stable release of Edge.
Microsoft has been taking jabs at Google for a while now. When Bing search results for Chrome appear, a banner is displayed at the top that states, “Microsoft Edge uses the same open source technology as Google Chrome, making it the best option for web and extension compatibility.”
