Intel Is Working on Enabling Path Tracing on Integrated Graphics

Intel has just announced the company’s future plans for its integrated graphics. The company is exploring ways to bring real-time path tracing to Arc discrete GPUs as well as its integrated graphics. This will allow the GPUs to render a higher fidelity version of ray tracing. This is exciting news but the arrival of this technology on integrated graphics is not in the near future. Here are all the details on Intel’s GPU plans for the future.

Path tracing on Intel integrated graphics

Path tracing is a more advanced level of photorealistic rendering which combines the use of ray tracing, sharing and sampling. “With Intel’s ubiquitous integrated GPUs and emerging discrete graphics, researchers are pushing the efficiency of the most demanding photorealistic rendering, called path tracing,” Intel said.

Intel to present research this summer

Intel mentioned ray tracing, shading, and sampling as “path tracing’s main building blocks.” The company added how these important components make it possible to bring path tracing “on more affordable GPUs, such as Intel Arc GPUs” and that the research paper presents “a step toward real-time performance on integrated GPUs.”

The company will present a couple of approaches they will explore to obtain this goal. Intel says it will publish several papers that go into the depth of the proposed plans, you can find a brief about them on the official blog post. These research papers will be introduced at industry conferences later this year.
