Jose Mourinho already repeating Tottenham excuses after Roma humiliation

Roma manager Jose Mourinho was left red-faced as Norwegian minnows Bodo Glimt inflicted his heaviest ever defeat as a manager during Thursday night’s UEFA Conference League action. Recent complaints about poor squad depth were followed up by scathing comments on his team’s quality after the final whistle, which could ring alarm bells for Tottenham fans.

The much-changed Italian side were completely outplayed, despite heavyweights like Tammy Abraham and Lorenzo Pellegrini coming off the bench.

By which time, Roma were already well behind and four second-half goals from Glimt, who beat Molde to the Norwegian title last season, secured an emphatic result.

It marked the first time Mourinho has ever conceded six goals as a manager, and he was in no mood to take responsibility after the final whistle.

In fact, he claimed that he is in charge of a side with ‘many limits’ after a succession of complaints in recent weeks.

The prospect of spending more money in January must therefore be a daunting prospect for the club’s owners, but Mourinho is clearly not satisfied with the tools at his disposal.

“I was honest with the players,” he continued.

“I have never hidden that it is a team with many limits: one thing is the top 12-13 players, another one the rest of the squad.”

Such complaints about quality may be familiar to Tottenham fans after Mourinho delivered a similar excuse for Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Newcastle back in April.

“I think it was not a problem of fight, not a problem of attitude,” he said then.

“The players they wanted to win but I have to be honest and say I saw things on the pitch not in terms of attitude but in terms of profile, vision, balance which belongs to the top players…I did not see that in every position.”

In what could yet prove to be an omen for his future prospects at Roma, Mourinho was given his marching orders from north London just two weeks later.

A tough tie with Napoli awaits on Saturday, after which the Portuguese could face more tough questions if the match does not go according to plan.
