Jurgen Klopp addresses transfer cost for ‘exceptional’ Bellingham

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has drooled over ‘exceptional’ Jude Bellingham ahead of the club’s summer pursuit. However, he has admitted he has ‘no idea’ how much the Borussia Dortmund midfielder will set back the successful suitor in the race for his signature.

Liverpool have reportedly made Bellingham a priority in the summer transfer window, with Klopp keen to add a marquee midfield signing to his ranks. The Reds targeted Aurelien Tchouameni earlier this year, but the Frenchman snubbed a move to Anfield in favour of Real Madrid.

But Liverpool are expected to return to the frame for an elite midfielder at the end of the season. And Klopp, hoping to revitalise an ageing department, has heralded Bellingham, pinpointing his 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar for praise.

He said: “Bellingham is just exceptional. He plays so mature, like a 28-year-old. Everybody already knew his skills, but I have no idea what that means for the money side of it. He’s very good, exceptional. He had an incredible World Cup.”

Liverpool are likely to be left short of midfield numbers ahead of the 2023/24 campaign amid a few uncertain futures on Merseyside. James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are all out of contract in July – none are expected to sign extensions.

With Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago all in their late 20s or early 30s, a younger face would be welcome on Merseyside. And there aren’t many, if any, better teenagers in world football today than Bellingham, who has established himself as one of the game’s elite midfielders since leaving Birmingham City for Dortmund.

Liverpool won’t be alone in the hunt for Bellingham, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid all ready to compete for his services. But there will be confidence at the club that the 19-year-old will view them as the best fit for the next stage of his career.
