Justin Thomas downs can of beer at Ryder Cup to spur on US crowd as Europe in disarray

The Ryder Cup isn’t over yet – but it looks like Justin Thomas and the American fans are already celebrating. Team USA were again dominant in the Saturday foursomes session as they turned a 6-2 advantage into a commanding 9-3 overall lead, leaving Team Europe with a mountain to climb to retain the trophy they won in Paris in 2018.

Understandably, the home fans were in jubilant mood following the foursomes, and Thomas, alongside Daniel Berger, seemed determined to gee them up even further.

The pair walked over to salute the fans in the grandstand on the first tee, who responded by throwing them a can of beer and urging them to drink it with chants of “chug a beer, chug a beer.”

And to the delight of the raucous spectators, the 28-year-old and Berger duly obliged by taking the can, raising it above his head, and swigging it back.

It sparked yet more frenzy amongst the fans, prompting loud chants of “USA, USA,” as Thomas was cheered off the tee.

He reunited with Spieth for the Saturday foursomes though, and was clearly fired up as he gained his first win of the weekend, beating Hovland and Bernd Wiesberger 2 up having fought back from three down early on.

Thomas has been rested by Stricker for the fourth session however, and told Sky Sports after his win with Spieth that he was “looking forward to supporting the team,” during the afternoon.

Padraig Harrington’s side certainly have ample work to do if they are to suppress any further American noise from the galleries, with Team Europe having never before faced a six-point deficit at this stage of the tournament.

The Irishman has opted to send out Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry first up, who face Tony Finau and Harris English.

The Spanish duo of Garcia and Rahm face Koepka and Spieth.

Fleetwood partners Hovland against Scottie Scheffler and the divisive Bryson DeChambeau, while Ian Poulter and Rory Mcllroy are out last against Dustin Johnson, with three wins from three to his name so far, and Colin Morikawa.

Thomas however, who made his Ryder Cup debut in France thee years ago, will return in the singles on Sunday and barring a remarkable European fightback, may well be swigging more beers with his fans.
