Knights Suffer Tough Loss to Bethel

LAURINBURG, N.C. – Despite two receiving touchdowns by wide receiver Kashard Cohens (SR/Norfolk, Va.), the St. Andrews football team fell to Bethel 42-22 on Saturday afternoon in Knights Stadium. 


Bethel (1-1) jumped on the board first with a nine-play, 64-yard drive that ended with a ten-yard passing touchdown four minutes into the game. The Knights (0-2) answered late in the first on a perfectly timed 45-yard pick-six interception from Lavarius Heath-Lewis (FR/Charlotte, N.C.).



The Wildcats closed out the first quarter by scoring a touchdown with no time remaining. Bethel would go on to score 14 unanswered points, as they raised their lead to 28-7 at the halftime break. 


Just as the game began to feel out of reach, the Knights found the endzone when quarterback Andrew Fowler (SR/Hillsdale, Mich.) found Cohens for his first points of the day. Fowler’s 24-yard pass capped off a seven-play, 45-yard drive. 



With the score at 42-15, St. Andrews scored its final points of the game with 5:27 left in the game when backup quarterback Austin Wallace (SO/Royal Palm, Fla.) found Cohens streaking down the sideline for a 47-yard touchdown pass.


The Knights finished with 216 passing yards, 115 rushing yards, and 15 first downs. St. Andrews finished with zero points in the red zone on three attempts. 



Individually, Fowler finished with 136 yards (9-18), while Wallace passed for 80 yards (2-9). Trevor McNeil (SR/Charleston, S.C.) led the Knight ground attack with 17 carries for 81 yards. Cohens led all players with 159 yards.


Monte Williams (JR/Raleigh, N.C.) led the St. Andrews defense with eight tackles, while Aj Miller added seven and one tackle for a loss.   



Andrew Austin (SR/Taylor, S.C.) who has been serving a dual role finished with three tackles and added two extra points and a two-point conversion. 


The Knights will now look to earn their first victory of the season on the road against St. Thomas on Saturday, Sept. 18. The kick-off in Miami Gardens is set for 12:00 pm.
