Looking for Black Friday deals: Here’s an important warning and some safety tips – Times of India

Black Friday deals can prove to be ‘dangerous’, warn cyber security experts. Check Point Research (CPR) has advised Black Friday shoppers to watch out for phishing scams. The company says that it has seen a sharp increase in fake shopping and delivery websites. CPR estimates that one out of every six malicious emails in November were related to shipping. Security researchers recently caught two phishing scams related to high fashion brand Louis Vuitton and courier company DHL.
This email for Louis Vuitton is fake
Researchers caught a malicious email impersonating the fashion-brand Louis Vuitton, containing the subject line “Black Friday Sale. Starts at $100. You’ll Fall In Love With Prices.” Once clicked, the site led to a malicious destination. Over the past month we have seen an increasing number of incidents involving these domains, reaching close to 15,000 in the previous week.

Know DHL email is fraud
Another campaign that security experts warn about is that of DHL. It says that it found a campaign of emails impersonating the delivery company DHL. Emails were sent from a webmail address “support@consultingmanagementprofessionals[.]com” and spoofed to appear as if they had been sent from “SHIPMENT TRACKING”. Attached to the email was a malicious URL, which aimed to steal the victim’s credentials by claiming that they needed to pay to complete the delivery. 17% of all malicious files distributed by email in November were related to shipping, as per CPR.

How to stay safe of Black Friday scams
Security experts from CPR have also shared some simple tips to stay safe. These include:
* Always buy from an authentic and reliable website.
* Be alert to similar-looking domain names. Check the spelling.
* Beware of ‘too good to be true’ offers.
* Always look for the SSL padlock.
* Be wary of any password reset email, never click on these unless you are very sure.
