Man Utd may avoid transfer nightmare after Andre Onana went back on his word
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may end up avoiding the possibility of losing Andre Onana for the Africa Cup of Nations next year after the Cameroonian came out of international retirement as he’s reportedly refused to commit to his country beyond their qualifier against Burundi. The Africa Cup of Nations gets underway in the middle of January with Cameroon still yet to qualify for the tournament.
They face a must-win match against Burundi next Tuesday with Onana back in the international side after his public fallout with Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup. Onana featured for his country in their opening group game in Qatar, but was sent home shortly after due to ‘disciplinary issues’.
The 27-year-old announced his retirement from international duty shortly after the tournament ended. He ended up missing crucial back-to-back qualifiers against Namibia in March, with Cameroon picking up just one point from those two matches.
But Onana has now returned to the international setup this week in a bid to help his side reach the Africa Cup of Nations. However, ESPN report Onana has only committed to playing against Burundi and nothing more.
It’s claimed that no decision has been made yet on whether he will play for his country at the Africa Cup of Nations if they do qualify. The news will come as a potential boost for United, who face the potential of losing Onana for a month midway through the season.
If the goalkeeper ends up going to the Africa Cup of Nations, United would be left short in the goalkeeping department as Ten Hag may have to rely on the untried Altay Bayindir or 37-year-old Tom Heaton. Onana’s U-turn on his international retirement also reportedly came as a surprise to United.
