Marketa Vondrousova explains how Wimbledon bosses helped her beat Ons Jabeur

Marketa Vondrousova claims a decision from tournament bosses helped her win her first Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon. The Czech star upset the odds by beating Ons Jabeur in straight sets in Saturday’s final at SW19.

Sixth seed Jabeur was the big favourite heading into the showpiece match. The Tunisian lost in last year’s Wimbledon final and suffered the same fate at the US Open.

She had dropped just three sets ahead of the clash with unseeded Vondrousova. But it was her 24-year-old opponent who came out on top, winning a topsy-turvy first set before eventually winning 6-4, 6-4.

High winds in London meant Wimbledon chiefs decided to close the roof on both Centre Court and Court One for Saturday’s action. Vondrousova says she was delighted that the decision was made and admitted it helped her game.

She said: “I was really happy they closed the roof because it’s very different than in the windy weather. The roof can help you with the serve.

“You just have to focus on the game, not on the wind, not even on the sun. I’m used to playing indoors. We practice in Prague in winter indoors. I always play good indoors.”

Jabeur broke down in tears after losing her third Grand Slam final in the space of 12 months. The 28-year-old admitted having the roof open could have seen a different outcome.

Jabeur said: “Maybe it helped her today to play good and put more balls in. I don’t know if the roof was open it would have been a different story.”

Wimbledon released a statement confirming why they had closed the roof. It read: “We have been monitoring the weather forecast and in light of the yellow weather warning issued, we have taken the decision to close the roof on Centre Court and No 1 Court.”
