Max Verstappen penalised ahead of Australian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen has been penalised by race stewards after breaking the rules in FP1 at the Australian Grand Prix. The Red Bull star has been fined £616 (€700) after exceeding the pit lane speed limit during Friday session.

According to the FIA, Verstappen’s car was clocked going just 6.4km/h over the 80km/h limit. However, Red Bull have avoided a sporting penalty meaning Verstappen will not be hit with a grid drop.

The FIA decision document reads: “Car 1 exceeded the pit lane speed limit which is set at 80 km/h for this event by 6.4 km/h.

“Competitors are reminded that they have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards, in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within the applicable time limits.”

Verstappen topped the timesheets in FP1 despite making a rare error. The reigning champion spun around after running wide at the fast left-hander at turn four.

However, he managed to stop the car before it collided with the wall meaning he was fine to carry on.

The Red Bull’s continued to look competitive in FP2 but they were beaten by the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso in the changeable conditions.
