Olivier Giroud scores ‘greatest disallowed goal of all time’

France striker Olivier Giroud had an outrageous overhead kick goal disallowed during his country’s World Cup showdown with Poland on Sunday after the referee halted the game with three players lying on the ground in the penalty area. And fans were left fuming by the decision, with one labelling it as the “greatest disallowed goal of all time.”

Giroud opened the scoring for France just before half time as he latched onto Kylian Mbappe’s pass and fired into the corner of the net. And the 36-year-old thought he had scored a second after launching himself into the air and unleashing an overhead kick into the back of the net.

But the referee had blown his whistle while the striker was mid-air after a clash in the penalty area during the build-up. Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had come to punch a cross but had collided with his own right-back Matty Cash, as well as France defender Raphael Varane. And when the ball hit the back of the net, all three players were strewn across the floor.
