Ricciardo replacing Perez turned down as Red Bull given ideal candidate

Dutch racing driver Tom Coronel believes Daniel Ricciardo has no chance of being considered to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull with Alex Albon tipped as the ideal man to step in alongside Max Verstappen. Perez had initially started the season in good form as it looked at one stage he’d be able to challenge Verstappen for the World Championship.

But his performances have dropped off in recent races leading to question marks over his future with the team. The Mexican is already signed up for the 2024 season, but its been shown in the past that teams are ready to change drivers early if they feel it necessary.

Red Bull’s main aim this season will be for Perez to help the team retain their Constructors’ Championship title. That looks almost a certainty already as Red Bull have nearly double the points of Mercedes in second.

Ricciardo is waiting in the wings at Red Bull for a chance at proving himself alongside Verstappen, but Coronel doesn’t think the Australian is up to the task. However, Albon has been impressing at Williams once again this year and Coronel wants to see the 27-year-old given an opportunity to return to Red Bull.

“Look, the question is, how quickly do you want to put someone in that seat?” Coronel said on the RacingNews365 podcast. “And we always see that at Red Bull, Dr. Helmut Marko says ‘this is him’ and plunges them right into the deep end, that’s actually what he does.

“And then it’s to see if they float. That just hardly ever happens. Gasly is broken, Ricciardo has disappeared with his tail between his legs.

“Albon could still give you a chance, because at least he has the experience now. There is peace in that man, so I would really like to see him in a top team again. Because he does it at times that it must happen.”

Albon was instantly given a seat with Red Bull midway through his debut F1 season back in 2019. Despite some promising results, Red Bull opted to move on from Albon with Perez coming in as his replacement for the 2021 season.

Albon sat out that year before regaining a seat on the grid with Williams, where he’s picked up a few impressive results. And he enjoyed his best result in a Williams car last time out at the Canadian Grand Prix as he finished seventh.
