Spider-Man: No Way Home Snubbed by BAFTA but Oscar Hopes Still Alive

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest entry in Spider-Man: No Way Home was dealt a major blow in its awards run after the movie was disqualified from contending in the upcoming BAFTA awards.

With Sony and Marvel campaigning for the movie to gain multiple nods in the upcoming awards season, it seemed like Spider-Man: Now Way Home was primed to earn some accolades at the popular British awards show.

However, Sony messed up their submissions for the BAFTA awards as it did not meet the criteria for contending in the 2022 iteration of the show.

For a movie to gain any consideration for a BAFTA award, the makers must make sure that it’s available to watch for voting members on British Academy’s online portal, BAFTA View.

The portal allows every voting member to experience the movie before the first round of voting, which closed on January 3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie was due to land on the service on December 30, which would allow the members to view the movie for about 4 days before the first round of voting ended.

Sony tried to gain an exemption to not upload the movie on to the BAFTA View portal because of piracy fears, as the movie continues to break records with its theatrical run.

However, it seems like the two parties haven’t been able to conjure up a solution for this matter, and currently the BAFTA View portal only contains the movie’s two-minute long trailer.

With Sony refusing to upload Spider-Man: No Way Home on to the portal, the movie won’t compete against the likes of Belfast, CODA, Dune, West Side Story, Licorice Pizza and many more at the 2022 BAFTAs.

This decision from Sony has dealt a serious blow in the studio’s aspirations to gain as many awards as possible in the upcoming season. With Oscars right around the corner, both Marvel and Sony have campaigned a lot for the movie to gain nods in categories like Best Picture and many more.

As the movie was ruled out of contention because of a technicality, fans can still hope to see some award nominations soon. However, until then, Spider-Man: No Way Home fans will have to suffice hearing more about box-office records than award nods.
