Twitter terminates several contract workers without notice: Report – Times of India

Twitter has reportedly terminated thousands of contract workers. The microblogging site (now owned by Elon Musk) is rumoured to have neither issued a notice to its internal employees nor did it inform the contract workers before deciding on these job cuts. According to a report by CNBC, several people who were working for Twitter on a contractual basis lost their access to Slack and other work systems of the company. Some of these contract workers are based in different overseas locations, including India. As per the report, 4,400 contract workers out of 5,500 has been suddenly terminated over the weekend.

The report also mentions that some full-time employees (who asked to remain anonymous as they are not authorised to speak on Twitter’s behalf) have claimed that Twitter has not even issued an internal notice before allegedly cutting off the contractors that they used to collaborate with.

These employees have also accused Twitter of dismissing the entire internal communications team. They have also mocked the company by saying that the media outlets covering Twitter are currently serving as the organisation’s internal communications team.
Twitter’s contractual workers were terminated after the company laid off half of its staff following Elon Musk’s acquisition. Neither Musk nor Twitter has not responded to these allegations yet.
Twitter’s quick expansion may have caused the massive lay-offs
As the social media giant reduced its workforce, the company’s co-founder Jack Dorsey has apologised for growing the company “too quickly”. Earlier, Dorsey supported Musk’s Twitter acquisition and transferred his own shares to a new holding company.
According to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Twitter had 2,000 employees as of June 2013 (just before the company went public). By the end of 2021, Twitter was reported to have employed around 7,500 full-time staff.

In a tweet shared by Musk, he addressed the mass job cuts and mentioned that the company was losing “over $4 million per day”. He also mentioned that Twitter has “offered 3 months of severance” to its laid-off employees “which is 50% more than legally required.”
Musk has also informed Twitter’s remaining employees about selling “billions of dollars worth of Tesla shares” to save the company. He also suggested that amid an economic downturn, the social media business may also be forced to file for bankruptcy. Meanwhile, during this controversial takeover, several advertisers have also fled or paused spending on Twitter.
