What US Vice President Kamala Harris said after meeting Google, Microsoft CEOs – Times of India

Google, Microsoft, and ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s chief executives were among a group of techies who were invited to the White House for a meeting to discuss the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI). In the meeting, the US Vice President Kamala Harris told the top brass of the tech companies that they have a “legal responsibility” to ensure the safety of their AI products.
“As I shared today with CEOs of companies at the forefront of American AI innovation, the private sector has an ethical, moral, and legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of their products. And every company must comply with existing laws to protect the American people,” Harris said in a statement.
Harris and US President Biden are open to advancing new regulations and supporting new legislation on artificial intelligence, she was cited by news agency Reuters.
Funding for AI development
Ahead of the meeting, the White House announced more funding and policy guidance for developing responsible AI. The funding includes a $140 million investment from the National Science Foundation to launch seven new National AI Research (NAIR) Institutes and increasing the total number of AI-dedicated facilities to 25 nationwide.
Companies including Google, Microsoft, Nvidia and OpenAI among others have also agreed to allow their language models to be publicly evaluated during this year’s Def Con, the Verge reported.
“These steps build on the Administration’s strong record of leadership to ensure technology improves the lives of the American people, and break new ground in the federal government’s ongoing effort to advance a cohesive and comprehensive approach to AI-related risks and opportunities,” the administration said in a press release.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will be publishing draft rules later this year for how the federal government should use AI technology. The AI models will be evaluated thoroughly by thousands of community partners and AI experts.
