WTC Finals: India, Australia fined for slow over rate; Shubman Gill for his social media post

The Indian men’s cricket team was fined 100 per cent of the match fee as a penalty for maintaining slow over rate in the final of World Test Championship (WTC) on Monday.

The victorious team Australia was also fined 80 per cent of their match fees.

While India were five overs short of the target, Australia were found to be four overs short, even after time allowances were taken into consideration. As per the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, every player is fined 20 per cent of their match fee over delay in bowling an over.

India’s star opener, Shubman Gill has also been slapped with a fine of 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Article 2.7 which prohibits publically criticising or passing inappropriate comments in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.

Gill took to his social media where the decision by television umpire Richard Kettleborough had adjudged a catch by Cameron Green to give him out on the fourth day of the match.

This appeared that the young batsman questioned the decision.Reacting to Gill’s dismissal, India captain Rohit Sharma called the decision “a little disappointing”, and said more camera angles could have removed any doubt reports Reuters. “There was only one or two camera angles that were shown,” Rohit said after their comprehensive defeat and compared it with the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“We’ve got 10 different angles in IPL. I don’t know why in a world event like this, there was no ultra motion that was seen or any kind of zoomed image was seen,” said the Indian captain.

The fifth day of the final of WTC concluded with India ending up as runner-ups as they lost seven wickets right in the first session.

Australia secured the title of champions by defeating India by 209 runs at The Oval.
