Xbox 360 Marketplace Shutdown ‘Posted in Error’ Says Microsoft

Microsoft has clarified that an article on its official support website saying the Xbox 360 marketplace will shut down in May was posted in error.

Speaking to IGN, a Microsoft spokesperson not only said the article was posted accidentally but also confirmed that the Xbox 360 marketplace will not be shut down in May 2023.

“This message was posted in error and we can confirm the Xbox 360 marketplace will not close in May 2023. As a reminder, beginning on February 7, 2023, a limited set of games, add-ons, and in-game content will no longer be purchasable in select markets via the Xbox 360 Store.”

The original article, being posted on Microsoft’s official support page, naturally caused confusion when spotted by ResetEra user Storm. “We will be closing the Xbox 360 marketplace over the next year,” it said, “so we encourage you to purchase any 360 games or DLC by May 2023.”

It was made even more convincing by Microsoft legitimately announcing a removal of some games earlier in February, as mentioned by the spokesperson. More than 40 games including Dark Souls, The Witcher 2, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and more will be removed from the digital Xbox 360 store on February 7.

Moving on from the Xbox 360 perhaps make some sense as Microsoft has made dozens of these games available on its later consoles, though it confirmed that no more titles will be made backwards compatible going forward.
