Your iPhone just got a free upgrade from Apple with some important changes

Apple has just released iOS 17.1.1, a new software update for recent iPhone models that addresses several issues and is designed to keep your smartphone running smoothly.

The update comes only two weeks after iOS 17.1 hit iPhones. That patch brought a few interesting new features such as allowing AirDrop transfers to continue over a cellular or Wi-Fi connection when out of Bluetooth range, plus additions to Apple Music including being able to favourite songs, albums and playlists, and song suggestions at the end of playlists (just like on Spotify).

iOS 17.1.1 is a smaller update by comparison but could be a godsend if you charge your iPhone in the car. Apple said: “In rare circumstances, Apple Pay and other NFC features may become unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in certain cars”. Many modern cars have wireless charging pads, but it looks like a bug was stopping you being able to jump out your ride and pay for your coffee on the new iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro as something was messing with Apple Pay.

If you’ve been experiencing that, a quick dive into your Settings app and tapping Software Update will show you have iOS 17.1.1 sitting there waiting for you to install. It’s not just for iPhone 15 though, with the changes stretching back to iPhones released since 2018. Here are all the iPhones that can download the latest update:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS

The update also addresses a big where the weather lock screen widget may not correctly display snow – a niche issue, but one that proves Apple’s attention to detail is second to none when it comes to software.

Apple has been busy improving its latest iPhones and Apple Watch models in recent weeks with similar updates, including watchOS 10.1 that introduced the clever Double Tap feature for the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. It’s an evolution of an existing accessibility feature, and allows you to tap your thumb and forefinger twice to scroll through widgets, pick up or end calls, and perform other tasks if your hands are full.

In the coming weeks we expect iOS 17.2 to push out to iPhones, which is set to include the brand new Apple Journal app that lets you create private journal entries.
